Being a teacher is admirable profession. However, like all jobs, some people are better at it than others. Teachers need to possess essential qualities to be successful at their job and provide the best environment for their students and their students’ success.
I think most importantly, teachers need to like their job and what they are doing. If they do not like it, they will not care or put in extra effort. Why would you want to be a teacher if you didn’t like it? When teachers do not like their job it shows and it affects the students as well.
Teachers also need to like kids. How could you be a teacher if you didn’t like kids? I don’t get it, but there are some teachers like that and it is completely evident to the students. It is discouraging as a student and not in the least helpful for anyone’s future.
Teachers need to be passionate. They need to care about what they are doing and genuinely want to help their students be successful. They should care about what they are teaching but also how it impacts and affects their students’ lives.
Teachers need to be understanding and respectful. Teachers need to be able to at times put themselves in their students’ positions and understand where they are coming from and the difficulties that come with the phases of life that they are in and remember they were there one day. They do not need to be “push overs” by any means, but just open and willing to understand.
Teachers need to be helpful. They need to be well trained in not only the topic they are teaching, but how to teach it! They need to know how to answer questions and help kids. They need to know how to approach concepts in multiple ways to ensure all students can understand. They should be willing to give extra help/attention to any student that is trying and putting in the effort as well.
